Apprenticeship Program

The ZATI apprenticeship program team recently held a series of hotel mobilization workshops to encourage our members working in the hotel industry to engage in this important program. As you will know from previous newsletters that this year the plan is to have over 100 young, local people interviewed and accepted on the program to be hosted by hotels in Zanzibar and Pemba. Thank you to Essque Zalu, Melia Zanzibar and Ndame Beach Lodge for hosting the team during the meetings and the team plan to visit other hotels in March. Please be in touch if you are interested in more information.

On the topic of youth training and employment the VSO careers Fair was held on Saturday, March 2nd over 26 companies and 600 unemployed youths attended. Zati had a special stall and also presented a seminar on the hospitality industry in collaboration with the current apprenticeship program with the aim to help reduce youth unemployment in Zanzibar. Renewing Zati membership and office news

As we are entering the month of March I would like to thank all of you who have re-joined for 2019 and 3 new members, Karibu Kwetu; EDU-venture and Zanzibar and Beyond Safaris. Welcome back after a break to Seasons Lodge and The Residence. Members of 2018 were sent invoices in late November and we can resend to you if you have yet to receive any communication.

We recently sent out a survey monkey asking for your opinions about our level and quality of communications - please check your junk emails if you have not received. 13 members gave useful feedback - especially on issues that they feel important to be addressed in their areas. These concerns will be taken to the board at the next meeting early April and we plan to organise more 'gatherings' for feedback from you and from us.

The current formal advocacy focus has been on the current use of the Skills Development Levy income collected by the government in the tourism sector
3 and will be presented on Tuesday, March 12th between 9am - 2pm at the Zanzibar Serena Hotel and you are invited to attend, lunch is included. Please email the office to let us know if you or a staff member can attend asap. The consultant will be available to present and discuss the findings and recommendations to the government, who will also be attending (see executive summary of the findings below)

Congratulations our member Doubletree by Hilton in Stonetown, as part of their Social Corporate Responsibility, for initiating a program to re-educate the Forodhani vendors in a Food Safety Management training. The hotel will be training 24 vendors over a two day period, there are a total of over 60 vendors working in Forodhani. If you are interested to also be involved in this program please contact either the ZATI office or the GM at the Doubletree by Hilton directly on Yehia.Elmansoury@hilton.com.
