Greetings from the ZATI office,

I hope that we are all keeping safe and taking precautionary measures amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Members News

 

MEMBERS NETWORKING MEETINGS HELD IN MARCH, 2020.
 

In March, ZATI board and team conducted networking meetings in all three regions of Zanzibar to get face to face feedback from members with regards to challenges being faced and any other issues that need addressing. The meetings were conducted as follows;

10th March,2020.
North: The Z Hotel, Nungwi.

12th March, 2020.
South: Breezes Beach Club & Spa, Bwejuu.

17th March, 2020.
North East: Bluebay Beach Resort, Kiwengwa.

ZATI  through its regional representatives will make follow ups on issues discussed and share updates accordingly. We would also like to thank the above hotels for being kind and generous in hosting our meetings and providing us with snacks and refreshments. ZATI would also like to thank all those members and non-members that attended the meetings. This gives us an opportunity to discuss matters face to face and to continue the spirit of togetherness as stakeholders of the tourism industry especially during these  difficult times.

 

Government news

THE 10TH ZANZIBAR NATIONAL BUSINESS COUNCIL FORUM
 

On 7th March 2020 His excellency the President of the Revolutionary Government  of Zanzibar Dr. Ali Mohammed Shein convened the 10th National Business Council forum which brought together members of the private and public sector of Zanzibar as well as officials from the Union Government of Tanzania. This years theme was " blue economy" which is an economic  initiative of:
"Utilizing the ocean such that it supports economic growth in a sustainable manner, reaping the economic  benefits  without depleting its resources"
The outcome of this years event was 14 resolutions  to be executed by the relevant authorities  through the different committee's of the Business council.

 

The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar through the Zanzibar Planning Commission has identified four major economic sectors within which Zanzibar can develop a comparative advantage, namely:
 

  1. Fisheries and aquaculture,
  2. Maritime trade and infrastructure (including shipbuilding, biotechnology, etc.),
  3. Coastal and marine tourism,
  4. Energy (renewable energy and oil and gas).

UPDATE ON CORONA VIRUS

Our newsletter last week contained a range of issues involving the Corona virus in Tanzania. For this week we are still awaiting official communication from the government on those infected, their progress and how the government is dealing with the pandemic.

As of 30th March the Ministry of Health issued a statement confirming that 2 additional cases have been confirmed in Zanzibar taking the number to 5  confirmed cases in Zanzibar. As of 31st March, 2020  the first Corona death has been confirmed in Tanzania. So far the total number of confirmed cases in Tanzania is 24. Below are the official Swahili letters issued by the relevant authorities. We will continue to share updates as we receive them. In the meantime we urge everyone to take caution as advised by medical experts. The contents of the Swahili letters are those shared  briefly in this paragraph. 

In addition to the above The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued directives granting visitors who were provided with Visa notices but could travel a 3 month extension. Furthermore the Ministry has also stated that all foreign nationals whose permits, visas, passes, or exemption certificates have expired or are about to expire have been granted a one month grace period. Once the grace period is over all foreign nationals mentioned above must report to Immigration services for further directives.

ZATO our associate partner organization in the tourism industry has established a fund raising committee to raise money from mainly their members and other willing and able businesses.
 
The funds are  to be used in the spirit of corporate social responsibility to assist the community in these dire times. ZATI strongly believes this effort should be supported by our members and non member hotels. The funds will be used to purchase materials to support the community protect itself from the COVID-19 Virus. As of 2nd April, 2020 the fund handed over 10 tanks to be used as washing stations to the Ministry of Health of Zanzibar. To this end we appeal if you wish and are able to contribute please send money however small in the following manner:
